Your Questions, Answered

  • That’s a great question. I am originally from Mississippi, and Mississippi remains the place I’ve spent the most time in my life. In addition to Mississippi, I’ve lived in Chicago, Boston, Seattle, and California, and I now live and teach just outside the Twin Cities of beautiful Minnesota.

  • For the last three years, Sufjan Stevens has been the top of my annual Apple Music list, but as a category, I honestly have never not loved a song I’ve heard at a sports arena. Give me some “Enter Sandman” and some “Welcome to the Jungle” and the “Going the Distance” theme from Rocky, and I’m a happy girl.

  • My writing has been (lovingly and not so lovingly) described as “sex writing posing as food writing” and I think that’s an adequate answer for now. :) Also, I find that food is a sensory memory trigger for me, and as a memoirist, I rely on those to re-enter moments I most want to revisit.

  • Use my contact page here on my website. I’m generally really good about keeping up with email (though I’m a parent and work full-time and have to wash dishes and vacuum just like everyone else, so be patient with me if it takes a day or two).

  • For manuscript feedback, I charge $300 up front and $.02 per word.

For speaking or writing festival/event engagements, I’m flexible. Contact me to discuss.

  • Writer and podcaster Dan Savage called me “absolutely delightful company” which is a thing I now brag about every chance I get. I’ve got former work colleagues all over the U.S. who will vouch for me and the wonderful team at Kaye Publicity (specifically Kaitlyn Kennedy and Katelynn Dreyer) will also do so.
